‘Death in Bollywood’ is now available on iPlayer, the desperately sad and extraordinary story of Jiah Khan who, in her short but brilliant career, was all too familiar with exploitation within the film industry and who tragically missed the fledgling metoo movement in Bollywood by just a few years.
I had been cutting this series at Grain with the wonderful director Marta Shaw for just a couple of weeks before the pandemic struck. The majority was cut in my kitchen, with Marta directing by phone.
I’m ashamed to say that Marta was the first female director I have worked with and it was a joy! The story of Jiah Khan was incredibly complex and needed extremely careful handling in the edit. We managed to make it because Marta is such a thoughtful communicator who could see all sides of this very sad story.
